So pleased I joined

I joined UK Veg Gardeners a while ago.
What a wonderful friendly Website with an active Forum

I have had lots of questions answered having found that growing Vegetables is not as easy as it looks on TV Gardening Programmes

My Dad was a Naval Man and he called the November Garden tidy up " buttoning down the hatches " so here I go to do a bit more while it is still light

Necessary Pond Maintenance

The Pond looks so pretty full of leaves. I have now removed them or when they rot they will poison the water killing our Fish and Frogs

NOVEMBER 2013 So much to do

I am still training our Tayberry around our Trellis clockwise

I think all Gardeners will know why I made this

Why is it so hard....

After waiting months I am finding it very hard to pick our one and only lonely Courgette.  I can't see any female flowers on the plants so this might be the only one

It's the same with the French Beans.  It has been a struggle growing them with so many Slugs. I have put off picking them for weeks. I now have enough for one meal at last so I picked them today.

August is ending in the Vegetable Patch

It was lovely to find a Frog or Toad among our Swedes today.  I won't be using any Organic Slug Pellets again.  I love seeing Wildlife in the garden

The weather is still warm so I have sown more CARROTS, RADISHES and LETTUCE.  I dropped an open packet of radish seed on the Greenhouse floor....whoops !

Natalie's AUBERGINES are growing well

My second sowing of FRENCH BEAN Speedy are just about ready for harvesting.  The ones growing in tubs are better than the ones growing in the ground

Oh dear this Blog is getting boring.  I will remember what not to grow next year now and I am learning a lot so it has been worthwhile......maybe

CARROTS no good at all
KOHL RABI struggling
SWEDE RUBY  struggling

Beginning of August

Cheeky Snail in broad daylight !  We did  have a  tray of Lettuces for a few weeks until he found them

Radishes are said to be so easy to grow ?  Ours have gone to seed.
Should I pull them all up ?

Dwarf French Beans are just about ok

Drawer Bed. The Fennel I replanted in a pot looks happier than the ones in the bed.

Now named the Disaster Bed because everything has been struggling to survive in it. The Artichokes behind it look happy and the one which appeared in the bed is thriving too

Broad Beans

Gooseberry Bush is now a skeleton

Hubby helped me hunt for Slugs by torchlight for the first time
I Slug Hunt every evening now and usually find about 30
The Plot is full of beautiful white Butterflies
It is wonderful listening to the birds singing while I potter around
My French Beans have flowers on them .....yippee !

I will just plant anything anywhere I find space and worry less about trying to do it properly !

Lettuce spacing and reminder to self for next year

Conflicting advice is so confusing for beginners. My Husband bought these lettuces which have been sown less than an inch apart. I regret thinning out my lettuces now as it said to on the packet. These commercially grown ones are tightly packed and are perfect.
My Spicy Mix ones have gone to seed already. I need to read up more about the best variety to grow.
Any suggestions would be very welcome

Reminder to self.  Don't even think about growing Strawberries
I haven't grown Strawberries this year as rats ate them last year
This is the other reason.  When they are reduced my husband buys 25 boxes of them and we can't fit them all in the Fridge !

Hanky Panky in the Veg Patch today

I am so excited. It doesn't take much to get me excited. I must get out more !

We have had dozens of Stag Beetles in the Veg Patch.
Today I found a Male and Female healthy pair together.
I hope there has been a bit of Hanky Panky going on and we will see their offspring when they emerge in about 5 years time

What should I do with my Fennel ?

I was so excited when 3 of my 16 Fennel seeds came up
( In the middle of photo )
I have just read that Fennel is not a good bed companion and can only be grown with Leeks
Because only 3 came up I sowed Beetroot next to it yesterday
It is in bed with Scizonera ( only 5 of 12 came up ) Endive and Spring Onions
I don't know what to do ?  Will it kill it if I try to transplant it ?
Advice needed please.....

JUNE REVIEW Has it been worth it ?

We have produced tons of compost

A lot is growing but VERY slowly.  The temperature is only 15 degrees c outside

I will keep our Mint in it's hanging basket as it looks happy

Hardly anything is happening in the drawer bed

The "Slugs Galore " bed is struggling

The only produce harvested so far is from our

So has it all been worth it ?
Positives. Exercise and fresh air and we have learned a lot
Negatives  Not finacially worth it so far
I hope Our Review at the end of July will be better

This is Horny the Stag Beetle who I am nursing in the Greenhouse

Our Kitchen Garden is looking more colourful now

Our Kitchen Garden is looking more colourful
I have marked where I have sown some more Kohl Rabi Seed with my used Birthday Cake Candles

This bobbly thing is blowing around in the wind acting hopefully as a Bird Scarer.  I have never seen one before.  It was in the bunch of flowers my Son gave me for my Birthday

Thanks for dropping by. Marion x

20 th June. Good and bad news this week

I will start with the GOOD NEWS

Now the BAD NEWS

Our cats have wrecked the netting and been digging so
I have had to put wire netting over the vegetable beds

The SWEDES called Marian came up ( did my Mum name me after a Swede I wonder )
Slugs have eaten every Swede already ! I caught about 30 Slugs by torchlight this evening

Still waiting for The KOHL RABI, BUTTERNUT SQUASH and FENNEL to come up.  Eaten by Slugs I expect

Only one FRENCH BEAN called Speedy has come up..... or the others have been eaten ?
It said " Ready in 7 weeks on the packet
I have planted the rest of the packet and marked where they are with sticks in what now looks like a Vegetable Graveyard
I hope everything perks up if and when the sun comes out

What do I do with a Caterpillar ?

I found this fat healthy Caterpillar today. Friend or foe ?

I showed it to Charlie who promptly picked it up in his gentle Spaniel mouth and ran off with it !

The Caterpillar survived being dropped 6 times by Charlie
I can't kill a butterfly in pyjamas so I have put it as far away as I can from the veg patch
I have sown today 9 BEANS and 16 BEETROOT all soaked for 2 hours after reading my " Square Foot Gardening " Library book
Some SWEDE have come up at last.
They were sown between the ONIONS 8 days ago. I marked where I put each one with a wooden stick
An ARTICHOKE has come up in the BEETROOT bed  !

13 th June The past week in the vegetable patch

I have managed to borrow Mel Bartholomew's " Square Foot Gardening " book from the Library

What a brilliant book.  I will definately be buying a copy
What has popped up this week  ?

CARROTS so tiny it is hard to see them and one FRENCH BEAN
Poached Egg flowers, LETTUCES and BEETROOT

I nearly trod on a STAG BEETLE

Anyone who knows me knows that I love Stag Beetles so this handsome chap is very welcome. Luckily I spotted him in front of the ONIONS when I took this photo

Shopping Trip to Garden Centre for more Garden Tools

My new " Super Seeder " seed sower is useless so I have just sown some tiny SWEDE seeds called Ruby by hand
Does anyone have one of these gadgets and love it ?
I wish I had read the Reviews about it on Amazon before buying it

I only went to the Garden Centre to buy some Watering Can Roses because our furry Gardener chewed up the last one
